Why Choose Gold Beach?
When you purchase one of the many Gold Beach, OR homes for sale, you're not just buying four walls and a roof - you're buying a lifestyle. Chances are, if you're looking at properties in Gold Beach, you're the type of person who's enamored by the outdoors. If you would unerringly choose a day in the woods over a day at the spa, a river raft over a racecar, and a starry night over the lights of Las Vegas, you deserve to consider owning Gold Beach, OR real estate.
But outdoor recreation is only a portion of what Gold Beach, OR properties have to offer. As a resident, you'll quickly be adopted into a tightly-knit community of people who enjoy this relaxed coastal lifestyle. You'll find community activities sponsored by local businesses and the Gold Beach Chamber of Commerce, like the annual Seafood, Art and Wine Festival, held at the Event Center on the Beach. There's also the Valentine's Day Crab Crack and the annual Cedar Valley VFD Fish Fry, both of which will give you a chance to sample the local seafood.
Stop by Gold Beach Books in the center of town for live music, reading and writing classes and seminars, or just to grab a novel and a cup of coffee. View the work of local artists at one of Gold Beach's fine art galleries, or feast on local seafood, Italian cuisine, or Chinese fare. No matter what you enjoy most, you're sure to find it here among beautiful Gold Beach, OR properties for sale.
In the mid nineteenth century, as California was in the throes of the Gold Rush, gold was discovered in the sands at the mouth of the Rogue River. Although the volume of gold prospected in Gold Beach couldn't hold a candle to California's discovery, a thriving community sprang up around the local mines. The town's name was Ellensburg, but everyone referred to it as Gold Beach, and eventually the name became official.
Today, you can still pan for gold on the beach, although you're more likely to find agates and jasper, both of which can be discovered on the sands of the appropriately named Agate Beach. The stones are easier to find during winter months, but sharp eyes can often spot a glimmer in the summertime sun. Local shops offer these semi-precious stones, along with beautiful green glass carried on the Kuroshio current from Japan.
The most valuable commodities in the area must surely include Gold Beach, OR properties. For assistance with a Gold Beach, OR relocation, or for more information about Gold Beach, OR homes for sale, contact Realtor Robert Concienne.
A Fisherman's Paradise
While early settlers were busy looking for precious metals in Gold Beach, another natural resource was discovered: salmon. In Gold Beach's early days, these fish were harvested by the boatload, and in 1876, a man by the name of Robert Hume built a hugely successful canning operation.
It wasn't until the late 1890s that Gold Beach residents discovered that salmon could be caught with a hook and line. After 1896, when a local man cast his line and reeled in an 18-pound salmon, sport fishing became an integral part of the local culture. In 1935, commercial salmon fishing was abolished by the State of Oregon, but recreational sport fishing remains incredibly popular.
Residents of Gold Beach can expect excellent fishing all year long. In addition to the Chinook Salmon runs, which last from mid-July through October, there are also Summer Steelhead and Coho Salmon to be caught as early as late August, and deep sea fishing charters are available throughout the year. The Rogue Reef, just offshore of the river mouth, provides some of the best bottom fishing in Oregon.
Whether you prefer fishing on the river or at sea, you'll find a number of local charter services who are ready to take you on an excursion you'll not soon forget. All year long, jet boats are ready to take you upriver, and the local guides offer plenty of fishing advice as well as fascinating stories. You can certainly cast your line from shore, but the true angler's experience begins upriver, where you'll find the coast's best fishing and gorgeous scenery, as well as superb food and a number of riverside sportsman's lodges.
Fishing isn't all you'll discover in Gold Beach - you'll also find windswept beaches to stroll, hundreds of trails to hike, white water rapids to raft or kayak, and countless acres of pristine wild country to explore. All this adventure and more await you when you invest in one of the many Gold Beach, OR homes for sale. A local Gold Beach, OR Realtor like Robert Concienne can assist you with your Gold Beach, OR relocation needs.
North of the many Gold Beach properties for sale, you'll find the tide pools at Agate Beach and Rocky Point, teeming with life. Additional tide pools are waiting to be explored to the south, at Myers Creek and Lone Ranch Wayside. The Oregon Coast Trail runs through the Gold Beach area, paralleling Highway 101. For the avid hiker, however, there is far more to explore upriver. For example, the Rogue Wilderness Area boasts hundreds of trails.
Also nearby is the Siskiyou National Forest, an enormous national park that covers over 1.8 million acres of wild land, straddling the California-Oregon border. Once considered two separate wild areas, the Siskiyou and Rogue River National Forests were combined in 2004 into a single entity. Included in the parklands are sections of both the Cascade and Coastal mountain ranges. Stunning rock formations and sweeping views are easy to find on any one of the forest's 600 trails. Countless miles of unpaved forest service roads are perfect for mountain biking, and established campgrounds can be found throughout the forest.
Whale watching, whether from the high bluffs or on the deck of a chartered boat, is another popular activity for residents who own Gold Beach properties. While the Grey whales spotted offshore are typically migratory, a few of these majestic creatures have chosen to reside just off the Oregon Coast. Whether seen alone or with a pod, these gentle giants are a magnificent sight.
